Lana Del Rey took to Instagram in a lengthy message about the backlash she receives in the music industry. However, her statement may have done more damage than anything else.
The alternative singer who rose to fame for her music that discusses sex drugs and rock and roll missed the mark when she mentioned artists like Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, and Doja cat while trying to call out the industry for accusing her of glamorizing abuse and other racy themes in her sings.
‘Question for the culture. Now that Doja Cat, Ariana [Grande], Camila [Cabello], Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f*****, cheating etc — can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money — or whatever I want — without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse??????’
She went on to confirm that she’s working on a new album and asked for more space for feminism.
While it was perfectly fine for Lana to express her feelings about the backlash that she receives, it was confusing as to why she had to drag (mostly women of color) into her argument when all of the women named make music for a completely different genre and face harsh criticism of their own.

Some also questioned why she didn’t call out Billie Eillish, who has been described as Gen Z’s Lana, for her number ones that discuss some of the same things that Lana’s music does.
One person tweeted: ‘think Lana’s post would have been fine if she hadn’t compared herself to a group of mostly black women with the clear tone that she thinks she’s been treated worse by the media when that’s observably untrue.’
